Some say that America has moved into and age of technocracy. The term technocracy refers to the fact that employment and society in America revolves around technology. Technology seems to be overwhelming the country. From I pods, your pods or our pods to Myspace, Facebook, Mybook Yourspace, or Facespace, technology surrounds our everyday lives. For me, technology is, as they say "bitter sweet."
I am not obsessed with technology nor do I like it very much. It seems that computers always disliked me and printers would not print for me. I never got into the Ipod craze and can function on the principles of a radio alone. I have no FaceSpace or Mybook. ... And yet I still survive. I just never immersed myself in technology. Instead of communicating with friends via text or Facebook, I would much prefer to meet them for dinner or personally spend time with them. Actually, texting hurts my thumbs, but that is beside the point. It is possible to survive with technology. And at a dinner table or social gathering... why do people constantly text? Is the current company not good enough? At work, people text. This seems to be a massive waste of American money. If someone spends 10 minutes on the job texting per day, imagine how many minutes, hours, or days of productivity are lost nationally per day. It is almost insulting at times when those around are texting. The best sight is a group of three people walking all texting someone... are they texting each other?? I wonder.
Technology is, on the other hand, a great invention. The internet, phones, ipods, sliced bread. Technology is a wonderful thing to have in life. Internet makes research easier, buying things easier, and communicating easier. Phones, ipods, email, cameras they alll have their obvious advantages. And, even for example, lighting. Even simple inventions, results of technological development are wonderful things. When power goes out as a result of a storm, how much do we realize the wonders of technology? Running water, hot water, TV, light, sound. Technology is obviously a wonderful human invention. If lights can be on while we are eating, does it not make sense that phones should be on too... ?
The line between where to use technology and where not to use it is interesting. Do you think technology is a good thing? Is it overused or underused? What about texting? Facebook?
I think technology is a great thing used in moderation, just like anything else. But, when at work or with company, it is utterly ridiculous to be on facebook, or on the phone, in my opinion. People talk about America's dependence on oil... I say what about America's dependence on facebook? I got it out. What do you have to say? Its about being heard.
I thought this was pretty humorous and insightful at the same time. I totally agree with you in saying that technology is good when used in moderation. It is absolutely crazy how people don't really need a computer anymore. A cell phone can basically do everything a computer can. Technology is making people less personable in a way. There is really no reason to meet and talk with people face to face. Facebook was good for it's original intention. It's original intention was to connect lost friends and classmates, but it has turned into a website that could ruin relationships as well. Bullying happens all the time to kids via Facebook, and the consequences could be horrific. I mean I do text and have a Facebook, but I use each appropriately. I guess what I mean to say is I hope kids become smarter about the way they use technology because when used properly, it could be extremely helpful.
